Leaving in between The Avenue of the Volcanoes, as the German scientist Alexander von Humboldt called the “Andean Highway” during his visit to the country in 1802-1803.”
“Quito is basically a BIG city. Not interesting at all. Chaotic & even ugly in many parts. However, this opinion dissolves when you enter the Colonial town of Quito. Absolutely worth a visit. A special spot where Past & Present come together.”

Another nice trip from Otavalo is a visit to Pambamarca, canton Cayambe. About an hour drive. An authentic rural area, high up the Andes slopes. Beautiful views all around.
